"The pilot just said: "Oh F***!" and he went down. We were on the ground in like 10 seconds!"
Sometimes making pretty pictures isn't as easy as it looks, well for directors that is. Us editors just receive neatly packaged balls of bubble-wrap with a hard drive hidden deep within a pop-able universe.
When you still need to get the shot but the chopper gearbox is lying all over the Namibian desert and after the pilots put it back together he tells you there's a 50% chance it'll happen again.. well maybe the shot isn't that important after all.
Let's come back tomorrow.
Fresh chopper, fresh eyes and a whole lot of good footage in the bag Robin and Di managed to get the shot they were after and another ball of bubble-wrap rolled into my office and the questions began to answer themselves.
Scripts, storyboards and pre-prod meeting after pre-prod meeting are all great parts of the process to be involved in, however nothing compares to the moment you load the rushes and begin to place one shot next to the other and press play..
It's in that moment that the magic of cinema really comes alive and the craft of editing starts to pay it's dues in the process.
This job was one of those processes where as much as you plan and en-vision, we only knew how good it would be once we had cut it together and even then there was a lot of post for the guys at Black Ginger to dig into.
At the end of the day Robin's fresh vision and extra day in the chopper really did pay off and we managed to produce a piece of work that does it's job for the brand as well as satisfy some creative questions.
As always the team at FoxP2 were amazing to collaborate with it's like having your family over for Sunday lunch :)
Let's all do lunch again soon!
